Does This Sound Familiar?

Most people who contact me about alcohol are not drinking because they love it. They are drinking because it has become the quickest way to switch off, and the habit has crept up a little at a time until it feels more in charge than they are.

If that sounds like you, you are not weak and you are not on your own. It is a pattern, and patterns can be changed.

You might recognise some of this:

  • A glass in the evening to unwind has turned into most of a bottle
  • Telling yourself "not tonight" and then finding yourself pouring one anyway
  • Weekends that start on Thursday and finish on Monday morning
  • Drinking more when you are stressed, bored, tired or anxious
  • Waking up feeling rough, low or anxious, and promising yourself you'll cut down
  • Social events where drinking feels expected, and saying no feels awkward
  • Wanting to drink less, not necessarily to stop altogether

Why Cutting Down Feels So Hard

Drinking habits run on autopilot. Over time, your mind links alcohol to certain times, places, moods and people, so the urge arrives before you have consciously decided anything. Six o'clock, the end of a hard day, the fridge door, a Friday night. The cue fires and the hand reaches for the glass.

This is why willpower on its own so rarely holds. You can decide in the morning that tonight will be different, but by the evening the automatic part of the mind is running the show. Alcohol also takes the edge off stress and anxiety in the moment, then leaves you lower and more anxious the next day, which makes the next drink more appealing still.

Hypnotherapy works at the level where the habit actually runs, changing the automatic pull rather than asking you to fight it every evening.

Is this the right page for you? This page is for people who want to cut down and stay in control. If you have tried to stop and found you couldn't, or you feel shaky, sweaty or unwell when you cut back, that is physical dependence, which is a different piece of work and needs medical oversight alongside hypnotherapy. My alcohol addiction page covers that.

How Hypnotherapy for Alcohol Reduction Works

I combine clinical hypnotherapy with The Darren Carter Method to change the habit itself and the stress, triggers and emotions that feed it.

We start with a consultation, where I learn how much and how often you drink, when the urge is strongest, what you have already tried and what you want to change. From there, every session is built around you rather than a generic script.

In the sessions we work on:

  • Weakening the automatic pull towards a drink at your trigger times
  • Breaking the link between alcohol and unwinding, so you can switch off without it
  • Handling stress, boredom and low mood without reaching for a glass
  • Feeling confident saying no, or stopping at one, in social situations
  • Improving sleep, so you wake up clear-headed and with more energy

Every session is 90 minutes: 60 minutes of hypnosis and 30 minutes to talk through what's changed and what's next.

You receive a recording of each session to listen to between appointments, along with a Client Support Guide, so the work carries on at home.

Sessions are available in person at my practice in Wokingham, or online via Google Meet from anywhere in the UK.

Making the Change Last

Cutting down is one thing. Keeping it that way through holidays, celebrations, hard weeks and old drinking friends is where most people come unstuck, which is why we plan for those moments from the start rather than waiting for them to happen.

Each session builds on the last, and the recordings and Client Support Guides keep the work going between appointments, so the new habit has time to settle and hold.

If your goal changes along the way and you decide you would rather stop altogether, that is fine too. You can read more about staying alcohol-free here, and about how clinical hypnotherapy works here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to stop drinking completely?

No. This page is about cutting down and staying in control. Many of my clients want to drink less, or only on certain occasions, and that is exactly what we work towards. If you decide along the way that you would rather stop, we can work on that too.

How does hypnotherapy help with cutting down?

Most drinking runs on automatic habits linked to certain times, moods and situations. Hypnotherapy works on those automatic patterns directly, reducing the pull towards a drink and giving you calmer ways to deal with stress, so drinking less stops feeling like a constant battle.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people notice a difference within the first few sessions. The four-session package is the one most people choose, as it gives time to change the evening habit, the stress behind it and the social side, and to make sure the change holds.

Does it help with binge drinking at weekends?

Yes. Weekend and binge drinking usually follows its own pattern, with its own triggers and expectations, and we work on that pattern specifically, so you can enjoy a weekend without it turning into a heavy one.

Can sessions be done online?

Yes. Online sessions take place via Google Meet and work just as well as sessions in person. All you need is a quiet room where you will not be disturbed.

What if I drink to cope with stress or anxiety?

That is very common, and it is part of the work rather than something separate. Alcohol eases anxiety in the moment but makes it worse the next day, so we work on both together. You can also read about my anxiety work.
