Plain answers, no mystique — from someone who practises it every day.
If you're reading this, you're probably curious — and maybe a little sceptical. That's healthy; most of my clients arrived exactly the same way. So here's what clinical hypnotherapy actually is, in plain English: no jargon, and an honest account of what it can and can't do.
It's a talking therapy that uses hypnosis — a natural state of deep relaxation and focused attention — to work directly with the subconscious: the part of you where habits, automatic reactions and long-held patterns live. Most of what troubles people doesn't run on logic, which is why understanding a problem often isn't enough to shift it. Hypnotherapy works at the level where those patterns actually operate.
It's also nothing like stage hypnosis:
"I came in sceptical after years of anxiety. Darren explained everything so clearly, and within a few sessions the constant worry had genuinely lifted. I feel calm and back in control."
"I'd tried everything to stop drinking. The way Darren works got underneath the habit rather than just leaning on my willpower. Honestly life-changing."
"I was terrified of flying and thought hypnotherapy sounded odd. It felt like deep relaxation — nothing weird at all. I flew on holiday for the first time in years."

In my practice, these are the areas people come to me for most:
Every practitioner works differently, so here's exactly how I work — and why lasting change needs a little room.
A fair question — and here's the honest answer. Yes: it's a natural state your mind already knows how to enter.
Hypnosis is something your mind already knows how to do, and clinical hypnotherapy is completely non-invasive and drug-free.
There's no such thing as being trapped in hypnosis — at worst you'd simply drift into ordinary relaxation and come back to full alertness naturally.
As with any talking therapy, it should be practised by a registered practitioner. I maintain full registration, insurance and ongoing professional development.
On the free call I'll tell you honestly whether hypnotherapy suits your situation — and if you'd be better served by different or additional support, I'll say so.
Taking the first step can feel like the hardest part — but it's often the moment things start to change. Whether you'd rather call, message, or fill in the form, I'll personally get back to you. There's no pressure and no judgement, just a calm next step whenever you're ready.

Surprisingly familiar. You've drifted into light hypnotic states thousands of times — absorbed in a film, driving a well-known route on autopilot, or sinking into that comfortable place just before sleep.
In a session it feels like deep relaxation with your attention gently focused. Your body settles, your mind quietens, and you stay aware of my voice and your surroundings throughout. Most people say the time passes far faster than they expected — and that they leave feeling calmer than they have in months.
In this short video you'll learn why anxiety can feel so overwhelming even when part of you knows you're safe. Understanding how the mind works is often the first step towards feeling calmer, more confident and back in control.
In that relaxed, focused state the subconscious becomes more open to new learning — that's the working mechanism, stripped of jargon.
Instead of fighting a pattern at the surface with willpower or avoidance, we retrain the response underneath it. The trigger that used to fire anxiety, a craving or an angry reaction gets connected to a different, calmer response. With repetition the new response becomes the automatic one — which is why the change tends to last. You're not resisting the old pattern forever; the pattern itself is different.
Change doesn't only happen in the room. Alongside your sessions you'll receive recordings to reinforce the work at home, so the calmer patterns keep settling in between our appointments.
It's a simple, gentle way to keep momentum going — a few quiet minutes to yourself, wherever you are.
I'm fully qualified, registered and insured, and accountable to recognised professional bodies. You're welcome to check any of these directly.
