A phobia doesn't care that you know it's irrational. That's what makes it a phobia.
You can be capable, logical and in control of every other part of your life — and still feel your heart hammer at the sight of a needle, still plan entire holidays around not flying, still put off the dentist for another year. I'm Darren Carter, an Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapist, and I help people end fears and phobias at their source — the subconscious mind, where the fear was learned in the first place. Sessions are calm, practical and completely personal. No judgement. No being pushed to face anything before you're ready.
If any of this feels familiar, you're not alone — these are the things clients quietly tell me all the time:
Most people try to reason with a phobia. They read about statistics. They tell themselves it's silly. They force themselves to cope, white-knuckled, and call it progress.
It doesn't work, because a phobia isn't a thinking problem. It's a subconscious protection pattern — your deeper mind decided, often years ago and sometimes in a single moment, that this thing means danger. From then on it fires the full alarm automatically, before your logical mind gets a say. That's why you can't out-argue it. The same pattern sits underneath anxiety in its many forms — which is why the two so often overlap.
It's also why hypnotherapy works. Hypnosis communicates directly with the part of the mind running the pattern, and teaches it — calmly, safely, without you ever being flooded or forced — that the alarm is no longer needed. What the subconscious learned, it can unlearn.
I'd avoided the dentist for nearly eight years because of a phobia I was too embarrassed to talk about. Darren never once made me feel silly. After four sessions I sat through a full appointment feeling completely calm.
A lifelong fear of needles meant I'd been putting off blood tests my doctor kept asking for. Three sessions with Darren and I had the tests done without a wobble. I still can't quite believe how gentle the whole process was.
We'd planned our honeymoon around not flying twice. Darren helped me understand where the fear came from and quietly switched it off. I've now flown four times this year — the last one I actually enjoyed.

Get Help NowYour first session lasts 90 minutes: a relaxed consultation where I understand exactly how your fear works — when it started, what triggers it, how it behaves — followed by a clear explanation of hypnosis and your first experience of it. Follow-up sessions are built around 60 minutes of hypnosis.
Start with a free, no-pressure phone conversation — or book a session directly if you'd prefer. We simply talk through how your fear behaves.
Your 90-minute consultation maps out when the fear started, what triggers it and how it works — then you experience hypnosis for the first time.
Most phobias resolve in three to four sessions — some single-incident fears shift even faster — with Client Support Guides between sessions.
Everything is confirmed by email and there's nothing to prepare. You can choose in-person in Wokingham or online from home.
We talk through how the fear started and what you'd like to feel instead. No script, no judgement, no pressure.
Hypnotherapy is simply deep, guided relaxation. You stay fully aware and in control — and at no point will I surprise you with the thing you fear.
All the work happens in a calm, safe state, at your pace — as the subconscious pattern updates, the fear simply stops firing.
