Most people who contact me about spiders know the fear doesn't make logical sense. They know a house spider can't hurt them, and yet the moment they see one, their body reacts as if they are in real danger.
If that sounds like you, you are not silly and you are not on your own. A phobia is a learned response, and learned responses can be changed.
You might recognise some of this:
A phobia lives in the part of the mind that keeps you safe, not the part that thinks things through. At some point, often in childhood, your mind linked spiders with danger, and every time you have reacted or avoided one since, that link has grown stronger.
This is why talking yourself out of it rarely works. You can know perfectly well that a spider is harmless, but the alarm goes off before the thinking part of your mind has a chance to step in. The racing heart, the panic and the urge to get away are your body's protective response doing exactly what it has learned to do.
Hypnotherapy works at the level where that alarm is set, changing the automatic response so you can stay calm, rather than asking you to fight the fear every time.
I combine clinical hypnotherapy with The Darren Carter Method to change the fear response itself, calmly and at your own pace.
We start with a consultation, where I learn how the fear shows up for you, when it started, what you avoid and what you want to be able to do. From there, every session is built around you rather than a generic script.
In the sessions we work on:
You will not be asked to look at or handle a spider during any session.
Every session is 90 minutes: 60 minutes of hypnosis and 30 minutes to talk through what's changed and what's next.
You receive a recording of each session to listen to between appointments, along with a Client Support Guide, so the work carries on at home.
Sessions are available in person at my practice in Wokingham, or online via Google Meet from anywhere in the UK.

Every person is different, but the changes clients most often describe are:

I have never had himpnosis before and was a little worried but Darren was very welcoming made me feel at ease...I had 2 sessions and it has changed my life ....he tailors your session to you not just general across the board...thank you Darrenhelen Kitcherside · Google review
We took our 10 year old son to see Darren to help him overcome a fear he developed following a fall from the high bar during his gymnastics training. He only needed one session with Darren followed by listening to the recording a few times a week. Not only has he overcome his fear but he also has his love of gymnastics back with his new found confidence. I would recommend Darren and hypnotherapy to anyone who is looking to help their child over come a fear. We can’t thank you enough Darren!Denise Marston · Google review

A phobia rarely stays in one place. Over time it shapes where you go, what you do and how relaxed you can feel in your own home, which is why the change people notice usually reaches well beyond spiders.
Once the alarm is reset, many clients find they feel calmer and more confident in general, because they have proved to themselves that a fear they lived with for years can change.
If you have other fears as well, you can read about my wider fears and phobias work here, and about how clinical hypnotherapy works here.
No. You will not be asked to look at or handle a spider at any point. The work happens in hypnosis, where we change how your mind responds, calmly and at your own pace.
Most people notice a difference within the first few sessions. The four-session package is the one most people choose, as it gives time to clear the original fear, settle the everyday reactions and make sure the change holds when you next see a spider.
Yes. How long you have had a phobia makes far less difference than people expect. The response was learned, and however long ago that happened, it can be changed.
Yes. I work with children from around 10 years old upwards, and I hold a current DBS check. You can read more on my page for parents.
Yes. Online sessions take place via Google Meet and work just as well as sessions in person. All you need is a quiet room where you will not be disturbed.
That is very common, and it is part of the work rather than something separate. A phobia often sits alongside general anxiety, so we can work on both together. You can also read about my anxiety work.
There are two ways to begin. If you would like to talk it through first, I offer a free 20-minute phone call. Just send me a message and I will call you back. Or if you would rather get started, you can book your consultation directly.
Tell me a little about your fear and, if you would like the free call, a good time to ring. Mention your preferred contact method.
Fears often come in more than one shape. These are the areas I work with most.
