Alcohol and Anxiety

Self-medicating a problem it makes worse.

A drink quiets the anxious noise, at least for a while. That’s exactly why it’s so easy to reach for, and exactly why it’s so hard to stop reaching for. But alcohol doesn’t resolve anxiety, it borrows against tomorrow, and the anxiety that shows up the next day is often worse than what you were trying to escape the night before.

If drinking has become your main way of managing anxious feelings, you’re not alone, and there’s a way through that doesn’t rely on either one.

Does This Sound Familiar?

If any of these sound familiar, you’re exactly the kind of person I work with every week:

  • Drinking specifically to quiet anxious thoughts, not really for enjoyment
  • Anxiety that feels worse the next day, creating a cycle that’s hard to break
  • Using alcohol as the one tool that reliably works, even though it doesn’t really
  • Fear that addressing the drinking means facing the anxiety completely unmedicated
  • Noticing you reach for a drink at the first sign of anxious feelings, almost automatically
  • So you can find calm without needing a drink to get there, and without the anxiety that follows

How Recovery From Alcohol and Anxiety Works

A practical, personalised process built entirely around you.

1

Understand the pattern

We identify exactly how anxiety and drinking connect for you, whether anxiety reliably leads to a drink, or specific situations trigger both, so the work addresses the actual mechanism.

2

Address both patterns together

Using hypnotherapy, we work with the underlying anxiety directly, rather than only addressing the drinking and leaving the anxiety to find another outlet.

3

Build a genuinely calmer baseline

Recovery here means finding real calm that doesn’t need alcohol to reach it, and doesn’t come with the next-day cost.

After you book

Everything is confirmed by email and there’s nothing to prepare. You can choose in-person in Wokingham or online from home.

In the consultation

We talk through what’s been happening and what you’d like to feel different. No script, no judgement, no pressure.

Your first session

Hypnotherapy is simply deep, guided relaxation. You stay fully aware and completely in control the whole time.

Session length

Every session is 90 minutes: 60 minutes of hypnosis and 30 minutes to talk through what’s changed and what’s next. Nothing is rushed.

Learn More About Alcohol and Anxiety

The alcohol-anxiety cycle works like this: anxiety builds, alcohol temporarily quiets it, and the relief reinforces reaching for a drink the next time anxiety appears. But while alcohol suppresses anxious feelings in the short term, it increases them over the following hours as the body processes it — which means the next anxious period tends to be worse, not better. Each cycle reinforces both patterns.

See also: Overcome Anxiety for a broader look at anxiety support beyond the alcohol-specific pattern.

After drinking, the body works to restore its chemical balance, including suppressing the sedating effects of alcohol. This process tends to increase feelings of alertness and tension — what many people call “hangxiety.” Sleep quality also worsens even when you fall asleep more easily, and disrupted sleep is itself a reliable anxiety trigger. The result is that the morning after drinking often feels noticeably more anxious than the evening before.

See also: Alcohol Recovery Timeline for how this pattern shifts once the drinking stops.

Where anxiety and drinking are closely connected, working on them separately can leave a gap — stop the drinking without addressing the anxiety, and the anxiety tends to find another outlet or push you back toward the drinking. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious associations that link anxious feelings to reaching for a drink, and with the anxiety itself, so both patterns shift together rather than one being managed at the expense of the other.

More on staying alcohol-free for what the longer-term shift looks like once both patterns are addressed.

Registered with the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR) and the National Hypnotherapy Society, a UK Accredited Register recognised by the Professional Standards Authority. Full professional insurance is in place. All sessions are completely confidential.

Each session package includes dedicated e-guides designed to support the work between sessions. For the alcohol-anxiety pattern specifically, these cover managing anxious moments without reaching for a drink, practical tools for the times when the pull is strongest, and approaches for interrupting the cycle before it runs its course. The 3-session package includes three guides (worth £225 total); the 4-session package includes four (worth £300 total). Delivered digitally and yours to keep.

I’m Darren Carter, an advanced clinical hypnotherapist specialising in anxiety and addiction. I work with both patterns together where they’re linked — which, for most people who drink to manage anxious feelings, is exactly the right approach. Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions people most often ask before getting in touch.

Both are true. Alcohol can genuinely ease anxious feelings in the moment, but it disrupts sleep and body chemistry in ways that tend to increase anxiety the next day, creating a cycle.
Where the two are closely connected for you, addressing them together tends to work better than tackling one in isolation, since each reinforces the other.
Yes, particularly where they’re linked, working with the connection directly rather than treating them as two separate issues.
Alcohol disrupts sleep quality and affects the body’s stress chemistry as it processes it, both of which tend to increase anxious feelings the following day, sometimes called “hangxiety.”
Not necessarily a formal diagnosis, but using alcohol regularly to manage anxious feelings is a pattern worth addressing regardless of whether it meets a clinical threshold.
Most clients see meaningful change within three to four sessions, the same general timeframe as other alcohol-related patterns.
