OCD Hypnotherapy in Wokingham & Online

Break the cycle of intrusive thoughts and compulsions.

If your days are being shaped by thoughts you don't want and things you feel you have to do, checking, washing, counting, seeking reassurance, or running the same thought round and round, you're in the right place. I'm Darren, and helping people get out from under that cycle is a large part of what I do.

Anxiety often sits underneath the cycle; you can read more about anxiety support and what clinical hypnotherapy involves.

A calm, uncluttered room representing relief from OCD

Can hypnotherapy help me?

If any of these sound familiar, then yes, this is exactly what I help people with.

  • Intrusive thoughts that feel impossible to ignore
  • Checking, washing, counting or ordering that takes up your day
  • Needing reassurance over and over, and never quite believing it
  • The anxiety that builds when you try not to do the ritual
  • Hours lost to rumination with nothing resolved at the end of it
  • So you can get your time, your focus and your peace of mind back.

If compulsions are becoming habits that feel hard to interrupt, you may also find my habit-breaking support useful.

Understanding your experience

How OCD shows up

It takes a different shape for everyone. Whichever form yours takes, the mechanism underneath is the same, and that's what we work with.

Contamination & CleaningWashing, avoiding, never quite cleanWhat this looks like
Washing until the skin on your hands is raw, and still not feeling clean. Avoiding door handles, public toilets, certain rooms, or people who have been somewhere you think of as dirty. Changing your clothes the moment you get home. It isn't really about germs, it's about the unbearable feeling that something has been let in and can't be undone. The washing is what makes that feeling stop, briefly, which is exactly why it gets harder to resist each time. The work goes on the feeling, not on the washing.
CheckingLocks, switches, appliances, messagesWhat this looks like
Going back to the front door when you already know you locked it. Standing over the hob counting the knobs, or photographing the plug sockets before you leave. Re-reading a message five times in case it says something it doesn't. Checking gives you certainty for about thirty seconds, then the doubt returns slightly stronger, because checking is what teaches your mind the danger was real. Most people who check know perfectly well that the door is locked. That knowledge doesn't touch it.
Intrusive ThoughtsUnwanted thoughts that feel dangerousWhat this looks like
Thoughts that arrive uninvited and feel like evidence of something terrible about you. Violent images, sexual thoughts, blasphemous thoughts, the sudden idea that you might do the one thing you would never do. Almost everyone has intrusive thoughts. The difference with OCD is the meaning that gets attached to them, and the enormous effort that goes into pushing them away, which is what keeps bringing them back. You are not the thought. Having it says nothing about you, and you don't have to say it out loud to work on it.
Symmetry & OrderThings not right until they're exactly rightWhat this looks like
Things have to be lined up, balanced, facing the right way, or done in the correct order, and until they are there's a physical sense of wrongness that sits in your chest. Often there's no feared outcome attached to it at all, just the "not right" feeling and the need to fix it. It can take hours out of a day, and it's exhausting to live with precisely because it sounds so trivial to describe. It isn't trivial, and the feeling underneath it is what we work with.
Reassurance SeekingAsking, searching, checking againWhat this looks like
Asking your partner whether you said something wrong. Searching the same symptom again. Going back over a conversation to check how it landed. Reassurance works for a few minutes, then wears off, and each time you need slightly more of it. It also quietly puts the people closest to you into a role they can't sustain, which is why it so often creates tension at home. The relief isn't the problem, the needing is, and that's what the sessions are built around. See also my health anxiety support.
RuminationGoing over it endlessly in your headWhat this looks like
Running the same thought round and round looking for an answer that would settle it. Replaying an argument. Analysing whether you really meant something. Trying to think your way to certainty about a decision, a relationship, or your own character. It feels like problem-solving, which is why it's so hard to stop, but nothing is ever resolved at the end of it and you surface hours later more tired and no clearer. Rumination is a compulsion, it just happens in your head rather than in your hands.

Making sure this is the right support for you

OCD sits on a spectrum. For many people it's intrusive and exhausting but manageable alongside everyday life, and that's where hypnotherapy does its best work. Where OCD is severe, or where it's tied to something that needs medical input, hypnotherapy works best alongside your GP rather than instead of them. We'll talk about that honestly at your consultation, and if I think you'd be better served elsewhere I'll tell you.

Ready to get your time back?

Taking the first step can feel like the hardest part, but it's often the moment things start to change. Whether you'd rather call, message or fill in the form, I'll personally get back to you. There's no pressure and no judgement.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers to common questions about OCD hypnotherapy.

How many sessions will I need?
Most people work with me over three to four sessions. The consultation gives us a clear view of what's driving the cycle, and the plan is built from that rather than from a standard template.
Can hypnotherapy really help with intrusive thoughts?
Yes. Intrusive thoughts get their power from the anxiety attached to them and from the effort you put into pushing them away. Hypnotherapy works on that attachment, so the thought may still arrive but it stops carrying the same weight and stops demanding a response.
What if my compulsions feel irrational and I know it?
That's almost universal, and it's one of the most frustrating parts. Knowing something is irrational happens in the thinking part of the mind, while the urge comes from somewhere else entirely. That's precisely why reasoning with yourself doesn't work, and why we work at the level where the urge is actually generated.
Do I have to describe my intrusive thoughts out loud?
No. Some people find it a relief to say them to someone who won't react, and others would rather not. Neither is a problem, and the work can be done without you spelling out the content.
Is hypnotherapy safe for OCD?
Yes. It's a non-invasive approach, you remain fully aware throughout, and nothing happens that you haven't agreed to.
Will I stay in control during hypnosis?
Yes. You're aware of everything, you can speak, move and stop at any point. It's a state of focused relaxation, not unconsciousness.
Do I need a diagnosis first?
No. Plenty of people I work with have never been formally diagnosed and don't want to be. We work with what's actually happening in your day rather than with a label.
Can I do this online?
Yes. Online sessions work just as well as in person, and many people find it easier being in their own home.
